Physics…….Chemistry……. Biology……Mathematics
Thank you for joining in
I’m the Shannon half of this site that my Dad and I started when I was eight.
That’s a smaller me back then playing with a new batch of slime.
Dad’s friends call him Doc J because of a PhD in Physics: but he’s just my Dad. One afternoon at home when I was seven he showed me how to make a small bouncy ball with PVA glue and borax. After that I went on the web and got into slime myself. Since then my interests have expanded and topics have been added.
Science
Science is a conversation about things and connections that touches on all we could ever know about ourselves and the world. Think of it this way. Burning is a chemical process and heat is a form of energy that belongs in a study of physics. The reason for the tails on this leaf-hopper nymph, found on Lemongrass in our garden (biology) is a matter of physics and their structure belongs in mathematics.
All of us, adults as well as children, subscribe to fantasy and make believe. Stories are a wonderful dimension in our lives but our survival as a species depends on an understanding of reality as “science” challenges tradition and established belief with new data in real time.
Data and observations form the common thread in these short articles arranged in menus so you can find things, but always remember that subjects overlap: there might be some physics in a biology article.
Have fun. Do things yourself: get help when you need it and be a bit careful. If you find something that’s cool, you could let us know on email at [email protected].
Note: articles are in pdf format. Click through page by page on a phone, tablet or computer. If you click the download link when on a phone the text is a little larger. The pdf’s are formatted so they can be printed A5 size on A4 paper to make folded booklets: if you ever wanted to do that. Photographs are mine, or my Dad’s, unless otherwise acknowledged. Images of plants and live insects were taken at the house or close by in Pathum Thani, Thailand, 50 kilometres north of Central Bangkok.
